Doon Film Club

Denkpause films have started a film club called Doon film club, which happens on the third Saturday of every month. The purpose of the film club is not only for entertainment but also to analyse the movie from a filmmaker's point of view. The movie is observed in terms of plot, structure, audio, camera and other technical aspects. This monthly activity is a great opportunity for participants to learn about the various elements of filmmaking. And also allows them to share ideas and talk about films.

During the last screening, we watched the movie "Karwaan". The main roles are of Shaukat, Tanya and Avinash played by Irfan Khan, Mithila Palkar and Dulquer Salman respectively. The movie portrays a road trip from Bangalore to Kochi by two friends, Avinash and Shaukat who during their road trip pickup Tanya, a college student.

Karwaan's biggest triumph is Irfan Khan without question. This triumph is also coincidently it's downfall. The film relies too heavily on his wit and charm. While Mithila and Dulquer hold their ground brilliantly but whenver Irfan Khan leaves the frame, you glance at the screen with longing eyes wishing he would come back soon.

The narrative of the film is structured around the confusion between Dulquer's character and a family that involves the swapping of bodies of their loved ones. As the narrative unfolds, the plot is slowly revealed to be about the relationships that the three lead characters have shared with their parents.

The film is a love letter to parents. Their shortcomings, their failures and at times their success as a mentor and nurturer. While the message comes across quite easily, some plot points in the film are pointless and only act as a means to get our protagonists from point a to point b. This is highlighted when important characters jump out of seemingly nowhere and engage our protagonists into long conversations about their pysche and what they used to be and this can make the film drag and make the film seem longer than it already is. Irfan Khan's wit and the beautiful music of the film saves it completely.
